Malwine Nicolaus is a soprano from Bremen specializing in early music, particularly Western European repertoire from the 15th to 18th centuries.
Her approach to this sound world is shaped by curiosity and a desire to bring out the emotional depth of historical works in a sensitive way. For her, it is not just about authenticity but also about making the bridges between past and present audible.
She performs across Europe with renowned ensembles such as the Huelgas Ensemble (Paul Van Nevel), Vox Luminis (Lionel Meunier), and the JSB Ensemble of the Stuttgart Bach Academy (Hans-Christoph Rademann). In the summer of 2022, she won First Prize at the La Risonanza Competition (Fabio Bonizzoni, Milan) and appeared the following year as a soloist with the ensemble in Milan.
Her active work as a soloist in concerts and oratorios has already brought her together with well-known orchestras and ensembles such as the Dresden Baroque Orchestra, the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra, the Bremer Barockconsort, and the Thomanerchor Leipzig. She is also regularly active as a soprano with the ensemble La Protezione della Musica (Jeroen Finke), which focuses on forgotten works of the German Baroque. She can be heard on several CD productions of the ensemble.
In addition to early music, she is particularly interested in music of the 20th and 21st centuries and has already been involved as a soloist and ensemble singer in numerous world premieres.
Born near Leipzig, she grew up surrounded by the rich traditions of sacred music of central Germany. She studied voice and early music at the University of the Arts Bremen with Peter Kooij and Gemma Bertagnolli, completing most of her studies with Bettina Pahn. Her education was enriched by regular masterclasses with Dorothee Mields, Emma Kirkby, and Gerd Türk.
